Streetwear Glossary: 25 Terms Every Fan Should Know

18 October 2026

Drops, colourways, grails, boxy fits and more: a plain-language streetwear glossary for South Africans getting into the culture.

Streetwear has its own language. Whether you're new to the culture or just want to know what everyone in the comments is talking about, this glossary covers the terms you'll see most, from fits to drops to culture.

Fits and silhouettes

Boxy fit: wide through the body and cropped slightly shorter, giving a square shape. See boxy t-shirts.

Oversized fit: cut bigger and longer than standard on purpose, with dropped shoulders. See oversized t-shirts.

Regular fit: follows the body without being tight. The classic tee shape.

Dropped shoulder: the shoulder seam sits down on the upper arm instead of on the shoulder. It is a signature of oversized cuts.

Heavyweight: clothing made from dense, thick cotton that holds its shape. A heavyweight t-shirt is the streetwear standard.

Silhouette: the overall shape an outfit makes, for example oversized top with wide trousers.

Tonal: an outfit in different shades of one colour.

Releases and buying

Drop: a planned product release, often limited and announced in advance.

Limited run: a small batch that won't be restocked once it sells out.

Restock: when a sold-out item comes back.

Pre-order: paying ahead to secure an item before it ships.

Colourway: the colour combination a product comes in, for example "black/cream".

Capsule: a small, focused collection of pieces designed to work together.

Collab: a product made by two brands or a brand and an artist together.

Sold out (SO): gone, unless there's a restock.

Culture and slang

Fit: your outfit. "Fit check" means showing it off.

Grail: the piece you want most and might wait years for.

Hype: demand and excitement around a release.

Heat: a piece that's highly wanted. "That drop was heat."

Resell: buying limited items to sell on, usually at a higher price.

Essentials / basics: the plain, everyday pieces everything else is built on.

Statement piece: the one item in an outfit meant to stand out.

Layering: wearing pieces over each other: tee, hoodie, jacket.

Kasi style: street style rooted in South African township culture, from pantsula to amapiano. Read more in our streetwear in South Africa guide.

Luxury streetwear: streetwear made with premium materials, small runs and design-led detail. See luxury streetwear in South Africa.
